KEEN to help youngsters come together, S-League leaders Home United Football Club, together with the Harmony Centre and Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery, held the “Harmony through Soccer” programme yesterday.

With families in tow, players from the Home United S-League, Prime League, under-18 and under-10 teams visited Islam organization the Harmony Centre at An Nadhah Mosque in Bishan and the Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery in Bright Hill.

Billed as a day of “Learning Journeys”, the group of more than 300, including guest-of-honour Zainudin Nordin, deputy president of the Football Association of Singapore and Member of Parliament for Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC, attended talks on both Islam and Buddhism, with the aim to forge a closer understanding of both religions.

Venerable Sik Kwang Sheng, the Abbot at the Phor Kark See Monastery, explained: “Shortly after Singapore’s 42nd National Day, let us remember that strong religious and racial harmony is crucial for the progress of our nation.

“Just as sport can unite those of various backgrounds … this event hopes to unite those of various faiths for the common goal of fostering understanding and harmony.” — CUBBY LEONG

Media Release - Harmony Through Soccer

The Home United Football Club (HUFC), together with the Harmony Centre and Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery, will be organising a programme called ‘Harmony through Soccer’. This programme promotes awareness and understanding of the religions in Singapore amongst youths of different races and backgrounds.

The programme promotes bonding among youths through soccer. The participants comprise HUFC football players from the S-League and Prime League teams, players from HUFC’s youth development programmes from 10-18 years age groups and the parents of the youth players. Participants will embark on Learning Journeys at the Harmony Centre and Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery, where talks will be held to touch on the various aspects of Islam and Buddhism. About 300 participants are expected.

Mr Zainudin Nordin, Mayor of Central Singapore CDC, MP for Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC and Deputy President of the Football Association of Singapore, will be the Guest-of-Honour for the launch of ‘Harmony through Soccer’ on Sunday, 19 Aug 07, 8:30am, at the Harmony Centre @ An-Nahdhah Mosque.

Details of ‘Harmony through Soccer’ are as follows:
Date: Sunday, 19 August 2007 from 8:30am to 12:30pm
Venue: Harmony Centre – An-Nahdhah Mosque, No. 9A Bishan St 14, S(579786)

The participants will be in two groups, one to stay on at the Harmony Centre, while the other group moves on to visit the Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery (at 88 Bright Hill Road) before returning to visit the Harmony Centre.

This event is publicized at the Singapore United, the portal for the Community Engagement Programme (www.singaporeunited.sg).
