The Straits Times - Surprise bomb attack doesn't shake students
21 June 2007
On Thursday, 350 youths from 17 different schools were on a MRT train carrying two terrorists, when it exploded and unleashed chaos.
Fortunately, this was only a drill - part of a three-day camp on community safety and security organised by the SMRT, the police, the civil defence and youth development group Heartware Network.
Nevertheless, the students managed to identify the planted terrorists threats and promptly alerted the authorities.
The 'detrainment exercise' kicked off with an MRT train carrying 500 passengers moving from Ang Mo Kio control station to Bishan depot.
During the journey, one 'terror suspect' was identified by a student.
An emergency power shutdown followed and then an explosion, just as the train was reaching Bishan depot.
The train was then evacuated, and another 'terrorist' spotted and arrested in the crowd.
Defence Minister Teo Chee Hean, who was also on board, said he was impressed with the youths and their knowledge of what to do in emergencies.
