HSM 2007: Outdoor Movie Screening @ Changi Village
5 October 2007
On a cool and balmy evening of 21 September, Changi Village was transformed into an outdoor cinema where “United 93” was screened. The Outdoor Movie Screening @ Changi Village, graced by Mr Abdullah Tarmugi, Speaker of Parliament and MP for East Coast GRC, was one of the many events held in conjunction with the Homefront Security Month.

What is the movie “United 93” about? It tells the story of the passengers, crew and flight controllers on the ground who watched in dawning horror as United Airlines Flight 93 became the fourth hijacked plane on the day of the worst terrorist attack on American soil, 11 September 2001. As the plot progresses, one can observe the heroism of ordinary people thrust into an extraordinary situation and how a group of disconnected strangers became bonded allies in an attempt to overcome the terrorists and prevent the plane from crashing into the White House.
Audience engrossed in the movie
In a relaxed and enjoyable setting, the Home Team Eastern Sector, who is the organizer of the event, hopes to create awareness that every Singaporean has a part to play in our Homefront Security; ordinary people and not only rescue personnel can render assistance in times of crisis. To further drive home this message, a short 11-minute video on the Community Engagement Programme (CEP) was screened before the movie.
One participant was even overheard commenting that due to the close proximity of the location to Changi Airport, the suspense of the movie was further enhanced; the visuals of the movie was further reinforced by the live sound of the planes flying overhead!
At the end of the event, the audience left not only with a free picnic mat, but the realisation that they have a part to play, no matter how small, in the security of Singapore.
