14 June 2010

At the SG United workshop held on 15 Mar 2010 and 14 Jun 2010, cadets from the National Civil Defence Cadet Corps learnt about the CEP and resilience through a briefing and an interactive SG United Keypunch game.

Here are some photos from the 15 Mar 2010 workshop:

Briefing on the CEP

Solving the mystery of the SG United Keypunch game

Engaging in a discussion to reflect on the importance of working together, regardless of backgrounds, and staying resilient.

Here are some photos from the 14 Jun 2010 workshop. At this workshop, the cadets engaged in breakout discussions, 'World cafe' style, and got to share ideas and learn from different perspectives.

Working as one

Summing up their takeaways from the workshop, these are what the students have to say: -

How “resilience” is relevant to us: -

  • In general, RESILIENCE helps us as an individual to be firm, decisive, know what we want and work towards our personal goals. It teaches us how not to give up.
  • Like working in a group, or in a CCA. It enables us to have fighting spirit … It teaches us to strive to be the best, encourage each other and help others that are weaker (like during foot drills).
  • As Singaporeans/a community: to deal with hardship and overcome it rather than let it paralyze us.

Drawing relevance from the activities to racial harmony in Singapore: -

  • Our responsibility to help one another understand.
  • The game… led to us working together combining our differences into 1 solution.

The relevance of resilience in a crisis: -

  • Cooperation is important. Even if there is a clear leader, nothing will work out if the rest do not listen.
  • We need to react quickly in times of need.
  • Take the initiative, and not be a bystander.
  • Teamwork and communication are important.
  • In a crisis, focus on dealing with the important issues first.
  • Fighting Spirit: Fight for your friends at critical time

Lessons learnt about working together as a community: -

  • Working as 1, unite as 1
  • Understand each other’s culture and background
  • Lending a helping hand to all
  • Having teamwork, strong bond in community is important
  • Everyone is equal
  • Be open-minded and share knowledge
  • Having a common goal
  • Friendly and considerate
  • Encouragement
  • Participation

About working with new people, new team members: -

  • Communication, encouragement, socialize
  • Brainstorm together
  • Initiatives, opening up to others
  • Treat all equally regardless of races/ranks
  • Involve quiet ones
  • With common goal, all work towards the same objective
  • Some believe in first impression or smiling
  • Mix around and not only stick to own friend
  • Bonding comes naturally through working together
  • Trust and assume they will do it
