Tamil Murasu - Interfaith Games 2007
Hindus, Muslims and various other religious groups came together for the inter-faith games at the Serangoon Stadium last Sunday. The event was organised by Darul Arqam Singapore in collaboration with Joo Chiat CSC and Joo Chiat IRCC so that participants could better understand the different cultures, practices and beliefs.
The day long event included quizzes, lucky draws,a kids penalty shootout and a seven-a-side soccer tournament. There was something for everyone including a taichi session for senior citizens. Twelve teams took part in the soccer tournament with Darul Arqam Singapore, Siva Durga Temple, Kovan IAEC and Loyang Tua Pek Kong reaching the semi-finals. The players tried their best to score, spurred on by kompang beats and cheers from their supporters.
Said Samuel, one of the team players from the Siva Durga temple: "We trained twice a week for this tournament. Despite the short notice, we were well prepared." Darul Arqam Singapore beat Siva Durga Temple 2-1 to qualify for the final. Loyang Tua Pek Kong beat Kovan 4-1 for their place in the final.
Most of the supporters for Loyang Tua Pek Kong and Darul Arqam Singapore were down by the field when the final took place. Both teams played hard and things got a bit rough at times, but good sense prevailed. In the end, Loyang triumphed 2-1. Both teams received trophies, cash and other prizes.
Said Joo Chiat MP Chan Soo Sen: "This was a very good initiative. Sports actually brings the community together and gets them to interact and understand each other well. I hope we can make it a national event one day."
