During the 8th International Seminar on the Koban System of Japan and the Neighbourhood Police Centre System of Singapore on 19 Sep, the Minister for Home Affairs, Mr Wong Kan Seng, made the following comments:
"Community policing is one of the key strategies in police work and over the years the police has built up a good relationship and trust with the community with almost 50 percent of arrests being assisted by members of the public.
These members of public come from all walks of life and races. You can see that Singaporeans place great emphasis on safety and security. In this time of heightened awareness of terrorism, Singaporeans in general will be vigilant and keep the place safe against people who want to do harm to Singapore.
When public-spiritedness awards are given out, you will notice that these people come from all races and they do not distinguish when crimes are being committed against Chinese, only Chinese will help them, against Malays, Malays will help them and so on. Regardless of race and religion, Singaporeans are public-spirited and help one another.
This is the kind of cohesion we have built up over the years and the confidence people have among themselves. This trust will continue and our people are resilient enough to ride through this period of heightened awareness of terrorism.
It is not just one specific community will be affected if someting happens but all Singaporeans. We should not let the JI episode affect racial harmony and racial ties."
