Homefront Security Ambassador Camp 2008
Date : 25 October 2008
On 23rd October 2008, Bedok South NPC and MHA-Community Engagement Directorate jointly organized the Home Front Security Ambassador Camp for student leaders from the six secondary schools under the jurisdiction of Bedok South NPC. The camp was also supported by Home Team Eastern Sector especially by 2nd SCDF HQ. The 3 days and 2 nights camp aimed to train students in the concept of peer leadership and to be a Home Front Security Ambassador.
This programme serves to strengthen the cohesion between the police, schools and community, serving to establish a platform for youths to become efficient Home Front Security Ambassadors. These Ambassadors would then be well poised to serve as mentors to fellow students. It is hoped that the service learning activities conducted during the camp have enhanced the leadership skills of student leaders, their creativity and event management skills. It also introduced and challenged them to think about what they can do in their capacity as an ambassador to address crime in their school and to spread awareness on Community Engagement Programme.
A total of 60 students from Victoria School, Ping Yi Secondary School, Tampines Secondary School, Temasek Secondary School, Chai Chee Secondary School and Bedok South Secondary School participated in the camp. On the first day, talks on crime prevention, Preparation for Emergency preparedness were given to enrich the students’ knowledge of community preparedness in dealing with an emergency and methods of spreading crime prevention messages to their peers and the general public. This was later followed by a game challenge of setting up crime prevention exhibition booth in which students enthusiastically worked hand in hand to achieve the theme of the exhibition booth.
During the second half of the day, the passionate camp facilitators wasted no time to show students and Home Team Officers how to play the energy filled and concentration sapping games such as Genius World of Records and Fear Factor. The games also helped students to not only appreciate, but also celebrate their differences and stand united in times of crisis.
During the night, students were involved in a game, DEAL OR NO DEAL, in which students must come up with an emergency ready bag. However, to begin with they were only given one set of resources. They would then have to trade or go to the auctions to find the other resources. Through the hustle and bustle of the fanfair, students went all out to assemble the ready bags and got the best deals down - it was all a lot of fun excitement and non stop adrenaline pumping action! A perfect way to end the night!
The slight drizzle on the morning of the second day did nothing to dampen the students’ spirit for their visit to the Home Team Academy Training Village. Students donned their poncho and took a 5 minute walk to the Home Team Academy. There, they were split into small group and guided by friendly HTA officers to various exhibition stations. Located within various parts of the Training Village are newly introduced Counter-Terrorism (CT) Training Stations developed to fortify “last mile” training for Home Team first responders. The students’ knowledge on combating terrorism was further enhanced by the hands-on training. In addition, training stations also facilitated training beyond the classroom. They also try their hand at the hands-on quiz in the digital interactive room located in the Home Team Gallery.
The students went back to camp after their fruitful trip to the HTA and began preparing their performance for the camp fire with the assistance of the camp facilitator and their Police and SCDF mentors. In between preparations, they were treated to a game of ‘Ships and Island’ to keep their morale high before the campfire.
As nighttime drew, students were led by the camp facilitator for a cheerleading session as they waited for the campfire to start. Commander SCDF 2nd Division, Director of Community Engagement, Commander of Bedok Police Division, Commanding Officer Bedok South NPC and Captain Alauddin from SCDF 2nd Div and school partners vital to the camp’s success, were also present for the campfire. Gracing the event was the Guest of Honour (GOH) A/P Ho Peng Kee who delivered a stirring speech on how the security climate has changed as well as how our ambassadors can do their part in the current situation. Our three ambassadors thereafter brought him to the exhibition booth and explained the importance of Community Engagement, Crime prevention and Preparation of Ready Bag. Our GOH also lit the fire signifying the start of the campfire night. The guests were subsequently treated to lively performances showcasing the talent of the young ambassadors who performed skit based on crime prevention, Community Preparedness and fire safety. At the end of the performances, the guests were highly impressed with the efforts of the ambassadors. The campfire came to a finale with the GOH taking a group photo with the guest and the students.
On the last morning, ambassadors were given the opportunity to express their thanks by dedicating songs to their fellow ambassadors, Home Team Officers and camp facilitators. They were also awarded with fabulous prizes for their active participation in the camp. As the Ambassadors prepare to depart from the camp, they were once again reminded of the important role that they need to play as the Home Front Security Ambassador.
