The Straits Times - Little India celebrates harvest festival

10 January 2009

It is harvest time in Little India.

A nine-day celebration of Pongal, a harvest festival, began yesterday at Campbell Lane.

Pongal marks the start of the auspicious month of Thai, a time when Tamil Indians give thanks for the blessings of the past year.

Minister for Manpower Gan Kim Yong launched the event, now in its 10th year, by lighting a traditional oil lamp, considered to be auspicious.

Highlights of the celebration include a mass cooking of pongal, a sweet rice dish; nightly folk-dance performances; and the garlanding and feeding of cattle.
