The Straits Times - Multi-religious display of artefacts
16 December 2009
FOR the first time, a multi-faith exhibition with religious items from China and Singapore is being held here.
The week-long event at Suntec Convention Centre, which opened yesterday, includes priceless pieces from China's five official religions: Buddhism, Taoism, Catholicism, Protestantism and Islam.
Those from Singapore are of the 10 different faiths represented in the Inter-Religious Organisation, which organised the event with China's State Administration of Religious Affairs.
Leaders at last night's opening stressed the need for mutual understanding and tolerance towards other faiths. Chinese Religious Affairs Minister Wang Zuo An said in Mandarin: 'There are different religions in China, and it's just like living in a big family. They have mutual respect, they keep the common ground and leave aside minor differences.'
Similarly, Minister of State for Community Development, Youth and Sports Yu-Foo Yee Shoon said that a common space is a must for multi-religious societies.
The exhibition, titled Towards a Better World - Harmony, Friendship and Progress, has more than 1,300 items worth $1.2 million.
