The Straits Times - Racial bonding with halal mooncakes

04 September 2008

China national Cao Guoshuai, 17, was among 31 Nan Hua High School students who got more than a cooking lesson when they had a hand in making halal mooncakes yesterday.

Made of lotus paste and studded with dates, the mooncakes will be served at the breaking of fast on Sunday to Hong Kah and Choa Chu Kang residents.

The event was organised by the South West Community Development Council. The students - none Muslim, and 15 from China - also visited the Ar-Raudhah Mosque in Bukit Batok to learn about Muslim customs and culture.

Dr Amy Khor, mayor of the South West District, hoped it gave them 'a deeper understanding of different racial and religious cultural practices'.
