Uncertainties ahead but stay united: DPM Teo
Date : 1 August 2011

DEPUTY Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean said he expected the Singapore economy to grow steadily in the coming year, but warned of uncertainties in other countries that could affect Singapore.
Addressing Pasir Ris residents at a racial harmony event yesterday, he singled out problems in places like the United States, Europe and Japan that could affect the world economy.
He noted that in the US, for instance, a budget has not been agreed upon to allow the government to continue paying for services for its people. This will cause some uncertainties to the greenback and interest rates, which can affect the US as well as the global economy.
In Europe, crises in countries like Portugal and Greece are not resolved, he said, and going ahead, there are still many serious concerns.
Over in Japan, the country is still recovering from an earthquake and tsunami that hit in March.
Citing the recent Norway attacks, where a gunman killed 77 people, Mr Teo reminded residents of the need to remain a united community.
'You can see the way the Norwegian people worked together to unite and overcome this crisis. We can learn something from them so that first of all, to prevent any crisis from happening, (we) remain united,' the MP for Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC said.
'Secondly, if anything does happen, we must also be able to overcome it with a positive spirit, so that society does not break apart, and continues to remain together.'
