Different Religions, Same Faith in each other

Date : 27 February 2011

WHAT is good neighbourliness? How do different religions interpret it?

Representatives from different religions were invited to the Kampung Spirit@Aljunied to share on this. Their messages all converged and can be summarized into one key message: Understanding and respecting other cultures and religions. Have trust and look out for each other.

This is the first time various religious representatives congregate at a grassroots event as guest speakers to share on good neighbourliness.

Guest-of-Honour for the Kampung Spirit@Aljunied Mr Zainul Abidin Rasheed also called upon residents to draw lessons from what goes around the world and continue to strive to preserve harmony and to strengthen existing trust and friendship.

Citing current conflicts in Bahrain and Libya, Mr Zainul pointed out that there are conflicts still going on in other parts of the world and Singaporeans should stay vigilant and be on the look-out for potential threats and seize the earliest opportunity to neutralize it.

Aljunied GRC advisors Mrs Lim Hwee Hua and Mdm Cynthia Phua were also present at the event as special guests.

It is hoped that events like the Kampung Spirit@Aljunied can help forge closer ties among residents and strengthen trust within the community. Besides performances by youths from different cultural groups, a street soccer competition and an ethnic dress competition for children was also held.

The five-a-side street soccer competition saw teams from different secondary schools within the GRC and different religious organizations. Through competing together for the trophy, the youths would get a chance to interact and get to know more friends, no matter their race or religion.

In the midst of all the fun and action, Aljunied residents were also treated to Chinese, Indian and Malay traditional food.
