HSM 2007: Buona Vista EP Day

Date : 12 September 2007

September is designated as the Homefront Security Month to raise awareness and reiterate the importance of individuals taking personal responsibility in vigilance and preparedness.

The Buona Vista Emergency Preparedness Day cum Community Emergency Exercise held on 1 September is one such event that offered the community many opportunities to increase their knowledge of emergency preparedness.

One of the highlights of the Buona Vista EP Day was a mock briefcase bomb incident. The exercise kicked off with the scenario where curious passer-bys gathered around an unattended briefcase at Blk 104 Commonwealth Crescent. Suddenly, the bomb went off and members of public sustained injuries.

Before the arrival of SCDF and SPF, the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) members swung into action and assisted in evacuation and providing first aid to the ‘injured’. Residents were also assisted by Civil Defence (CD) volunteers or good Samaritans. Shortly after, the SCDF and SPF arrive at scene to render assistance to the “victims” as well.

The ‘Briefcase Bomb Scenario’ highlighted the importance of vigilance in the population and honed the response of the CERT members and CD Volunteers. Members of public also got to observe, under a simulated environment, how CERT members, CD Volunteers and emergency responders work closely together to minimise the damages in any eventualities.

Wonder how good you are at saving lives? Residents got the opportunity to test out their survival skills at five validation booths – the first aid booth, CPR booth, fire fighting booth, In-Place Protection booth and lastly, the Ready Bag booth.

Educational exhibits were also put up by the various Home Team agencies providing rich learning materials for the young and old alike.

The Buona Vista EP Day provided a good opportunity for residents to mingle, have fun and learn emergency preparedness at the same time!

This event, jointly organized by the Buona Vista Civil Defence Executive Committee and the Singapore Civil Defence Force, was graced by Minister Lim Swee Say.
